You shall make no mental images of lack.

Mosaic Commandment

Exodus 20:4-6 “You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Commentary

As human beings we are wired to create mental “images”. When I use the term image in this context I have an expansive concept of image that includes engagement of all of the physical senses as well as emotional senses such as joy, appreciation, hopefulness and enthusiasm. According to the Revealing Word an image is “A mental representation of anything not actually present in the senses” (Webster). Everything humans create is first created as a mental image before it is formed in manifest three dimensional forms. We form pictures in mind using the faculty of imagination. Often we may think of imagination as just a picturing process. However, it can be much more; it is actually a powerful faculty of creation.
